Lani Zaimi, owner of the former Ariano’s Restaurants in Carmel and Mahopac, was found guilty of forcibly touching the sexual and intimate parts of a female waitress while at his restaurant in January 2014.
This verdict marks the third successful prosecution and conviction of a violent felony sex offense, after jury trial, in Putnam County since March 2015. The first, Julio Soto, was sentenced to 57 years in State Prison by Judge James F. Reitz. The second, Victor Cruz-Garcia, is awaiting sentence by Judge James T. Rooney, but is facing 50 years in State Prison.
On November 1, 2013, Cruz Garcia violently raped and sexually assaulted the survivor while her five year old son watched television in another room. When she finally broke free from the violent attack, Cruz Garcia became enraged and threatened to harm her and her family if she contacted police.
